Genesis "Turn It On Again" - Tour 2007
After 10 years, Genesis is back on tour with Phil Collins as singer and part -time drummer. Collins left the band in 1996 to concentrate on film music and his solo career, but in October 2006 began rehea rsing again with Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford, which has now led to 22 concerts in Europe and a further 17 in the USA and Canada. Also joining them on tour are Daryl Stuermer as second guitarist and Chester Thompson as drummer. The longstanding relationship between Phil Collins and beyerdynamic is reflected in the use of beyerdynamic instrumental microphones on the tour.
"The complete backline for guitar and bass is under the stage", explains Michel Collin, Genesis' sound manager. All amps are picked up with MC 840 large-diaphragm microphones from beyerdynamic. "In the run up we experimented a lot there, and finally decided on these mics just before the show," continues Collin. "We'd already equipped Phil and Chester's drum kits with beyerdynamic microphones, so we tried out the MC 840 - and were really impressed."
Michel Collin also loves beyerdynamic microphones for the drums. "The complete kit is picked up by beyerdynamic mics, along with MC 840 for overheads I use the MC 930 for the ride cymbals and the bottom of the snare drums. On the top of the snare we use the M 201 TG. We also use the Opus 87, 88 and 99." Collin values the latter not just because of the sound, but also because of the stands - "they help the microphone to be positioned correctly, and best of all they stay almost completely out of sight." Two bar stools, which are positioned between Phil and Chester’s drum kits, are also equipped with the Opus 87. "We have a little gimmick during the show, where Phil and Chester play a five minute solo on the bar stools. We tried out a few microphones here, too, and ended up going for the Opus. With the Opus 87 the sound of the bar stools fits in better with the drum kit, and moreover, it can be attached perfectly to the seat," explains Collin.
